Summary

This project is a collaborative effort by scholars of the political and legal history of the Spanish monarchy across several universities to transcribe and publish online the first edition of the Recopilación de leyes de los reinos de las indias (1680), making this essential text of colonial Latin American history more accessible to scholars. Using transcriptions provided by participants, this project will train and develop a language model to generate the first transcription of this text, which will then be checked and corrected by the participants. It is expected that this model can then be used to transcribe similar early modern printed texts for digital publication.

Accomplishments

• Participants have transcribed an important portion of this text.
• A third of the index of the laws is ready.
